Hapa Bone Marrow Donors Needed

My sister was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. Because of her mixed heritage (Japanese/Caucasian) finding a match has been unsuccessful. She needs a donor from the same mixed heritage to save her life. I know the pride we all feel in being a Hapa, show it by registering to become a donor. Only we can save one of us.
It's easy to register:
-Be between the ages of 18-60
-Be willing to donate to any patient
-Meet the health guidelines
-Willing to fill out a consent for and give a cheek swab
Please visit the Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches website at www.AsianMarrow.org.

us "white ones"

don't all raise your hands at once or anything. i know how proud we all all of our white herritage!

anyway, you probably already kinda know who you are. you are mixed with white somewhere down the line. you are like me - kinda can get taken for white or are at least seen as kinda white by the non-white part of your mix and maybe probably by many people of color.

so the question is, do you consider yourself a person of color?

and very closely related but not quite the same, do you FEEL like a person of color?

my answer to each of those questions is yes.

but i get shit from people for that. how can that be possible they wonder.

ironically, what makes me not feel white is my passing ability. i get up around white folks who might assume im white or at least feel kinda "safe" with me and i hear things. or maybe they even know what i am but they are kinda ignorant so they say some shit. some kind of culture as cute comodity type thing. you know what i mean.

so i get around these people and i know i do not think like a white person. so i do not feel white. i have to leave it that undefined tho because while i feel like a person of color, i don't feel like a person of any particular color. i feel, simply, mixed.

im cross posting in other mixed type tribes.... sorry if thats annoying.

non-Hawaiians using the term hapa

Hi everyone,

I've just joined this board, so hi! *wave*

I haven't seen a topic yet on the controversy of non-Hawaiians describing themselves as hapa, so I thought I'd get a thread started. The hapas community on Live Journal has had some pretty heated arguments about this. I'm not trying to stir the pot here; I'm just wondering if anyone has first-hand experience with someone who has strong opinions on this topic.

Here's a good example: http://www.realhapas.com/

Personally, I'm hapa but not of Hawaiian descent (half Vietnamese, half Polish). I'm trying to understand their perspective, but I also think they're doing themselves a disservice when they resort to divisive language and an us vs. them mentality.

What are your thoughts?

Mixed Up Productions is currently accepting submissions of written and visual works for an anthology by and about mixed race Asian and Pacific Islander artists.

Currently, public readings, film screenings, and other events are taking place throughout Canada and the U.S. for the final chapbook. Entirely handcrafted, each individual chapbook is unique in its cover design.

In the tradition of the original chapbooks, the anthology will contain a wide range of works spanning poetry, short stories, monologues, performance art, visual art, scholarly essays, activist statements, and photography.

I would love for you to be present for the showing of my project, FishBird.

Years ago I was talking to a woman who proclaimed the impossibility of interracial marriages saying, "A fish can love a bird but where would they live?"

Sponsored by the Brooklyn Arts Council, this is my attempt to answer that question. The exhibit uses interactive sculptures, photographs and interviews with multiracial New Yorkers, FishBirds, who share their experience of living between cultures and between races.

Best,
Katrina

______

You're invited to the opening of FishBird

"So how are you Happa?" Part II

I just read through that thread, and thought I'd start a new one on the topic. I am happa by marriage. When my husband and I were dating and starting to get serious, my mother said to me, "You know, if you marry him, you'll spend your life being half-Japanese." Well, she didn't quite say it like that, and she meant it kindly, and not as racism. She had friends, one who was Korean-Hawaiian, and a different one who was an Orthodox Jew, who had married outside their ethnicity( one a white boy, the other a goy of some type) and were cut off by their families for it. She really just wanted me to realize the larger picture in the choice I would be making. I wasn't simply marrying a man I loved; I was marrying a different culture.

I really hadn't thought about it much before that. But, you know? She was absolutely right. I am now 1/2 Japanese, because that's what my family is. On the ethnicity question on forms, if you can mark two, I always mark Asian and white. Or I mark mixed race. Otherwise, I just mark "other."

So, anyone else understand what I'm saying? What are your experiences of being happa by marriage? For me, it feels almost like being adopted. My family is Asian-American, and I'm part of that family. But, I don't look like it. (I'm 1/2 Irish, 1/2 mutt.)

Hey all,

For those of you wondering what happened with Kip Fulbeck's Hapa Project, the book is now out and in stores, as well as being sold on Amazon (even though the Web page says it's not yet released:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811849597/sr=8-2/qid=1143767210/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-2205437-6874444?%5Fencoding=UTF8

I got my pre-ordered copy in the mail a few weeks ago. I think the book turned out quite nicely.

Also, SFGate.com interviewed Kip: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2006/03/30/apop.DTL

Hey everyone,

For those of you who are following the whereabouts of The Hapa Project (http://www.thehapaproject.com/) book...

My friend just got an email from Kip. He's been in Japan for the past 5 weeks and the book comes out in the spring. That's all he wrote, unfortunately. He's not one for long email, that guy.

Anyway, I'll post an update if I hear one.

I’m not a hapa but my daughter is... she's 4 years old and I already get the "oh how beautiful she is" and "wow, mixing really did her good" comments from family and complete strangers. I’ll do all I can to make sure she knows where she comes from, and how to carry her culture and ethnicity the "right" way.

Society makes it hard on humans in general but when it comes down to it… the admiration of another is simply opinion until they really get to know someone.

Oh yeah… I also have a cat named Hapa… :)

One!

Are you a "Bridge" person?

Hi folks,

I'm new to this tribe. My mother is of Okinawan descent, but raised in Tokyo, Japan. My father is mostly of European descent with a little Cherokee.

I've noticed that I am a bridge person between people of different backgrounds. My mixed ancestry has given me a perspective other than simplistic black/white, either/or dichotomies.

I've found that I'm a good coalition builder and mediator between people, not just race, but from different class, and gender identity backgrounds.

What perspectives do you have that you think are unique to mixed folks?

Hi folks,

I'm a student in New College of CA's masters program in Activism & Social Change. My thesis project is organizing Fluid, a community for folks who don't fit into conventional social categories (ie those of sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, class, ability, attractiveness, etc). www.groups.yahoo.com/group/SFFluid

For my research seminar, I'm conducting interviews so that I can answer the following question:

How are the experiences of bisexuals in the lesbian, gay, and straight communities similar and different to those of mulattos in the black and white communities?

I'M LOOKING FOR FOLKS WHO IDENTIFY AS OR GET CATEGORIZED AS MULATTO FOR 2-3 ONE HOUR INTERVIEWS.

If you are interested, please email me at heidimisken@yahoo.com ASAP.

Thanks!

I'm curious to know what end of the hapa scale you were raised.

I'm half Okinawan and half white. But I was raised in CA and in a mostly white environment with little bits of Okinawan life - food, occasional visits to mom's Japanese friends or very rare trips to Okinawa to visit relatives. Otherwise it was casseroles, jello, country music and life on a farm.

Did you get a 50/50 life? If not, now do you seek to balance yourself out by learning about the heritage on your other side?

I can't be the only one that loves this game. They always start off with "So, where are you from?”. I tell them Minnesota. Then it invariably progresses to "Really? Are you parents from there?" I let them know that my dad is, but my mom is from Chicago.
They usually try and take a different tack and ask what my last name is. That's Dutch, so it usually generates a fairly comical look of confusion.
At this point, they ask where my grandparents are from, and where they were born. They're usually slightly irritated and really frustrated at this point, because what they're trying to ask is obvious, but for some reason coming out and asking what race you are would somehow be ruder than putting you through half a dozen or more personal and probing questions involving your family tree.
It used to bother me, now I try and see if I can prolong it as long as possible. I've gotten a good twenty minutes out of several people. It’s become one of my favorite games

What words can you think of that mean more or less hapa, in any language? You don't have to stick to the gentle aloha ones, rough is ok too.

One Chinese person said "Ni shi hunxue!" (literally, mixed blood) Wonder if that is a literal translation from the English term, or something Chinese had all along?

Call for Hapa Writers/Artists

Mixt Up Productions is currently accepting submissions of works by multiracial Asian American artists for the third in a series of three chapbooks.

Mixed Up and Too Mixed Up include a wide range of works spanning poetry, short stories, monologues, prose, and visual art. Such themes discussed are sexuality, body image, class, and interpersonal relationships. While the contributors to the first chapbook mainly hail from the Los Angeles area, the second chapbook has a broader geographical range, and therefore, showcases a more varied spectrum of Asian American mixed heritage perspectives. The editors hope that the third chapbook, All Mixed Up, will expand further in the direction of an even more all-encompassing collection.

Specifications

You may submit as many pieces as you wish, however, combined word count among pieces should not exceed 2,000 words or 5 pages. Works should be already laid out in the format to be published. All works will be reproduced in black and white within an 8" x 5" vertical format.

To submit

Electronic submissions are strongly encouraged. Please send your name, contact information, a one-paragraph bio with two copies of artwork, or written material by March 1, 2004 to mixt_up@hotmail.com. Inquires should be addressed to brandy22@ucla.edu.

Selections will be made by series editors, Jamie Ardena and Brandy
Worrall.

identity, self-image

Hello everyone. I'm curious what different people's experiences are with self image and how you describe yourself to others and stuff like that.

My story is, I'm half lebanese half russian, and growing up I mainly thought of myself as a jewish girl or a caucasian girl. Just a few years ago, I was reading some essays by mixed race people and realized, a main reason why I hadn't defined myself as arabic is because my skin is so pale. I don't have the familiar olive skin and thick, straight(ish) dark hair. (Though people who know the look recognize me as Lebanese. But they're rare.) On top of that, arabic jews basically have zero visibility, it is as if we don't exist, or we have to choose between the two even though there is nothing contradictory about them.

So anyway I would love to hear people's stories about your own experiences. Especially if you are reclaiming a heritage you don't physically appear to be a part of.
