Hmmm.... interesting. I've always wondered about who's got the dominant gene. Have you been asking hapas about which parent is Japanese? Now that you mention it, I think I've been asked that before a few and the person just shook their head in an "ah yes" sort of way.

They both have the colorings of their mother, but I'd say that they probably have a good mix from both sides. But I think one looks more like you than the other though. They sure are pretty! I'm admiring one daughter's silver streak in her hair. Is it natural? I seem to be growing one myself.

I kinda got a 50/50 split of both my mom and dad. Haole dad had sandy brown hair, blue eyes, pale skin, pointy nose, thin lips. Okinawan mom has black hair, brown eyes, dark skin, flat-ish nose, full lips. I got, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, medium olive skin, rounded nose, and medium lips.

I don't know what it all means.

          Sandi,

Thanks.........I think the girls are pretty also and are great people too. Yes, the white streak is natural. My younger is the one w/o the streak I think she has more of an asian face then her sister.

As far as what it all means......well,you are blessed to be part of two cultures and from your pics you seem to like that diversity within yourself. You are very pretty.

yes sandi, you are a beauty. to me, i can see the japanese more. so maybe my theory was wrong. and oregon outdoor...your wife and daughters are beautiful! one looks more japanese to me, and the other could almost pass for part hawaiian. i guess its a mixed bag, and you never know what will get pulled out. whatever it is, its beautiful.

I don't know if that's always the case. My brother looks alot more asian than I do. It's just a toss of the genes.

I don't know if I look more Japanese or more Caucasian. My mom is Japanese, my dad is white. I think my brother looks more Japanese, and my sister looks more Caucasian. I'm somewhere in between.

I knew one girl and her brother who had blonde hair, and their mother was Japanese. I'm guessing their father had blonde hair, but I always thought that was unusual because most of us end up with dark hair. Of course, in my family, the Davis's all have black hair and blue eyes, so we wouldn't have any other color.

        Papaya,

You look more Japanese to me than Caucasian. I hate to be redundant but you, Jenn and Sandi are all very lovely.

I am partial to Asian women and brunettes in general.

When I was a baby I had a bright orange shock of hair and I looked very Japanese. As I got older, my hair got darker, but it still gets blonde/orange highlights if I'm in the sun a lot. It's odd, since my Japanese mom has black hair, and my Caucasian dad has brown. He does have some blondes in his family, however.

Throughout my life, Japanese people tend to think I look Russian, Spanish or some other non-Japanese mix. And white people tend to think I look Japanese. I guess I'm just confusing. :)

Well I am 1/4 Japanese but most people can't really tell what Asian denomination I am since I have Chinese/Viet/Dutch/Portugese/English blood along with. But yeah, I've Asian gene dominant.

Hm... I'm about the least japanese looking half-japanese person I've met. Here's a pic of my dad, my brother and me. Left to right:

I helped my dad pick out his first suit for the party. He looks fly, no?

Hey Lorin, I *may* have you beat.... most people don't see the japanese in me at all. My mom is from Yokohama, my dad is from Oaxaca and I guess I take after his side of the family more. My siblings all look much more Asian than I.

I think it's the dominant gene thing. Dark hair, eyes and skin tend to be dominant genes. I'm half caucasion and half filipino, and I think that i have the caucasion features and filipino coloring...by the way, I think people with japanese in them tend to be gorgeous

It'd be hard for me to disagree :)

Most of the hapas I know are half japanese, (actually, most of them are my cousins), although I met this hapa couple the other day, the girl was white/chinese, and the guy was black/korean.

I'm dying to know what their kids are going to look like.

yes, mixed people are so fucking beautiful!

but i have to disagree about the original statement cause i've met so many half japanese who go either way in their looks with no pattern.

myself im chinese and white. among me and my brothers, we span the whole range of looks and yes, it shifts all over the place with age, and i think attitude and demeanor.

My mom is half Japanese and Filipino. My dad is hella white. I think there are more of us "white looking" hapas out there, people just don't think to ask, "Are you half?"

I don't know. My mom was Japanese and my dad full-blood Yuchi Indian. When I have my pics taken with Japanese cousins, I don't quite fit. Same when it's with my Indian cousins. My brother looks more Japanese than me. Who knows?? I think it's just how the mix turns out.

Jenn - I would concur with your observation. I grew up as a military brat and noticed the very same conclusion.

I'm half Okinawan (Southern-most island chain in Japan), and my father's mostly Euro with 1/8th Cherokee.

I've discovered that looks are relative...When I'm in the Mission in San Francisco, people speak Spanish to me. I say, "thanks for the compliment, but I'm not Latino and only know a little Spanish." When I was traveling through Germany, people thought I was Turkish (Turks are the dominant minority group in Germany). I've been mistaken to be Portugese, Greek, Brazilian, Mexican, Filipino, any number of Mediterranean nationalities, full Native American (which there are many differing peoples). I guess people see what they want to see, or used to seeing.

I'm with Christopher on this one. I've learned that race is relative and constantly shifting. It does not reside within the object, but the withing the subject -- that is to say, it all depends on who is doing the viewing, not on whom is being viewed. As such, while it ironically reveals zilch about the racee, it does betray the love-tendencies of the racist. Some racists - anyone who categorizes another human as a racial quotum is a racist - want to include you in their race and some want to keep you out. It's unfortunate that most racists choose the latter. Gives racism a bad name, doesn't it?

I can even shift race sitting in the living room with my own family, although it happens less frequently these days. Depending on what I am doing, which language I'm speaking, I can be seen differently by my own mother or father. It's understandable because parents look for themselves in their children and see not only your kao or sugata, but your kokoro as well.

my mom is haole and i look pretty asian, but not necessarily japanese (though isn't it so hard to tell us asians apart? (i'm kidding by the way)). people always think i'm filipino. BUT my one brother looks middle eastern and my other brother looks native american. a lot of us half-breeds seem to be able to pass for a myriad of brown ethnicities.

not so in the case of my family. My cousins have haole mama and they look much whiter, or should I say even whiter than me and my sisiter....

      I don't see it.

I grew up in a military family and I have seen my share of Japanese mixes and I haven't notices a gender tendency as far as how Japanese someone looks.

I also dated a woman (who is still my friend) who's father is white and who's mother is Japanese. She looks VERY Japanese (and beautiful, I won't hesitate to add).

My two best friends (twins) were half Japanese, half Filipino. Their dad was Japanese and their mother was Filipina. The both of them look... well... Filipino.

-Of course, that's how it is with Filipino blood. It kinda takes over...

It's so difficult to predict what mixed children will look like. My mother is Japanese and my father is Black. With my sisters and I, it's a toss up. My older sister looks totally Japanese, my younger sister looks Samoan, and I look am somewhere in between. When I was younger I looked more mixed though. I wonder why that is???

This is an interesting question, and I guess I can't really say much because, frankly, I can't think of a half couple where the mom is Asian and the dad is white. Wierd, huh? What I HAVE noticed, though, is that the children of an Asian-born parent tend to look more Asian than the children born to an Asian parent born and raised here (U.S.)

I'm a white girl. My son's dad is Japanese ( raised pretty traditionally, but born here.) My son doesn't look all that Asian, really. Maybe just a little more than Lorin. He has cousins whose dad is Japanese and mom is white. There are 4 of them, and what a mixture they are! The youngest looks pure Japanese, jet black hair and eyes. She's an incredible beauty. Then there's the second boy, who looks totally white. Really.

That's an interesting observation. It's hard for me to say since most of the half/Japanese people I know have a Japanese mother. I personally am not hapa haole, my father is Mexican (with more European features). People always say I look much more Asian, though they usually cannot tell I am half Japanese.
