Are you an oddity in your extended family? Or are all your cousins hapa too?

Unfortunately, I wasn't raised to fully appreciate my Okinawan-ness. I'm born and raised in CA and mom (who is all Okinawan) decided to take on the all-American middle-class housewife persona. Now, I wish she would have at least pushed the language onto me.

My mom was previously married so my siblings are Mex, and I'm the only hapa (Chinese/Mexican).
All of my cousins are either Chinese or Mexican, but the next generation down has some mix -

but i have one set that is chinese with some hawaiian back in there somewhere. very sad. not the part about being hawaiian. but one of my cousins got the hawaiian hair and darker skin and it freaked her out. she spent a lot of time trying to not tan too much and to straighten her hair. then later she "grew out of it". she looks all chinese now.
oh. and i have korean and chinese cousins too.
must be extra strange to be the mixed one in the extremely immediate family. -

It took me years to figure out why I didn't look like my brothers & sisters. They told me they found me in a park. It didn't help that my Dad and I were the only Asians in town (little town in Arizona). -

Wed, March 30, 2005 - 10:48 PMMy white side is all white. We definitely don't look like part of the family when we get together, except we all have the same frizzy, dark hair.
On the Japanese side, my mom's sister also married a Navy man, so I have one hapa cousin.
As for the next generation, I married a Filipino, so our kids will be more mixed.

Fri, April 11, 2008 - 3:08 PMAll of my cousins on the Japanese side of my family are hapas. Oddly enough, all of my cousins on my German side are all Caucasian. Kinda odd I guess.
